Press Releases & News

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE – Today, Republicans on the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee voted along party lines to kill HB 1668, a bill to enact common-sense firearm background checks. Prime Sponsor of the legislation, Rep. Katherine Rogers (D-Concord) released the following statement:

“Requiring a background check of non-licensed gun sales is the very least we can do to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals. Right now, in New Hampshire, convicted domestic abusers and violent criminals can purchase a gun online, at flea markets, in private sales and at gun shows without any restrictions. Closing background check loopholes is essential public policy and does not threaten our 2nd amendment rights. In fact, similar laws exist in twenty-two other states and the District of Columbia.

I have introduced this bill six times in the House of Representatives and each year, more and more Granite Staters needlessly lose their lives to gun violence while no action is taken. It is far past time for Republicans to put aside their baseless excuses and protect our families and communities from deadly violence.”

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE – Today, the House State and Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs Committee voted unanimously to recommend CACR 32, inexpedient to legislate. CACR 32 declares New Hampshire’s independence from the United States of America. Representative Israel Piedra (D-Manchester) released the following statement:

“While I was pleased to see the State-Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs Committee unanimously recommend CACR 32 inexpedient to legislate today, the committee discussion on this bill was eye-opening and very troubling. In our discussion, some Republican members were more concerned with whether succession from the United States could be successfully implemented than with the concept itself. The committee Chair, a member of House Republican leadership, said he agreed with the concept of secession and lamented how that a sufficient plan does not currently exist to carry it out.

All state representatives took an oath of office to uphold the Unites States Constitution. It is shameful that New Hampshire Republicans are so openly advocating to leave the United States of America.”

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE – Currently as the House State-Federal Relations & Veterans Affairs heard testimony regarding CACR 32, a constitutional amendment that “peaceably declares independence from the United States and proceeds as a sovereign nation,” House Democratic Leader Renny Cushing (D-Hampton) releases the following statement:

“Republican lawmakers are so caught up in their disdain for America that they seem to think Granite Staters share their contempt for our country. This proposal to secede from the United States is the most unpatriotic piece of legislation I have ever seen come through the New Hampshire House. The sponsors of this bill should be ashamed to dishonor our veterans, our country, and the Constitution we all took an oath to uphold.

“By allowing Republican members to file such anti-American legislation just one year after the insurrection in our nation’s capital, the NH GOP is coddling and actively promoting extremist behavior. It is frightening to see the New Hampshire Republicans so eagerly promote and embrace anti-Americanism sentiment.”
