DEMOCRATS STRESS NEED FOR OPEN, TRANSPARENT REDISTRICTING PROCESS

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE – Today, the House Special Committee on Redistricting held an inaugural meeting to introduce redistricting legislation into the committee. Ranking Democrat Representative David E. Cote (D-Nashua) released the following statement:

“Ten years ago, the redistricting process was mired by lack of transparency, backroom deals, and laughably gerrymandered districts. The dragon-shaped Executive Council map that we have lived with for the past decade would make Elbridge Gerry blush.

The experience of ten years ago led voters to overwhelmingly support the concept of independent redistricting. While Republicans repeatedly blocked independent redistricting from being adopted in recent years, our obligation to engage the public in an open, transparent process remains. Democrats on the Redistricting Committee are committed to drawing fair maps for the Granite State.”
