GOVERNOR SUNUNU SIGNS GOP LAW MAKING IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR GRANITE STATERS TO VOTE

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE – Quietly last Friday without public acknowledgement, Governor Sununu signed SB 89, legislation that imposes a new voting system making it more difficult for Granite Staters to cast their ballot. In response to the news, Deputy House Democratic Leader and Ranking Member on the House Election Law Committee, Rep. David Cote (D-Nashua) released the following statement:

“SB 89 as amended is one of the worst pieces of legislation I have seen in my nearly 39 years in the NH legislature. It would violate the Elections Clause of the United States Constitution, waste an amount of money unknown to its proponents or anybody else, not to mention astronomical legal fees, in order to defend the indefensible: a separate and unequal voting system to inhibit efforts to make it less rather than more difficult for New Hampshire citizens to vote. It is a shameful exercise.”
