CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE – Today, the Special Committee on Redistricting held the first of two Public Input Sessions to receive public input on redistricting proposals presented to the committee last week. Deputy House Democratic Leader and Ranking Redistricting Democrat David E. Cote (D-Nashua) released the following statement:
“Granite Staters who testified today were unequivocal – the state House districts proposed by republicans fail to provide local representation and the GOP’s drastically redrawn Congressional districts upend longstanding communities of interest – all in a blatant attempt to rig election results.
As people noted repeatedly, republicans ignored the requirement for localized representation in drawing state House districts, choosing to lump towns together whenever possible for maximum partisan advantage. The GOP’s proposed Congressional districts are even worse, throwing out a century of tradition and competitiveness to produce the most gerrymandered map imaginable. Granite Staters could not have been more explicit – significant changes must be made to these partisan maps before they move forward.”
